The vibrational modes of the low-spin and high-spin isomers of the spin crossover complex [Fe(phen)(2)(NCS)(2)] (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) have been measured by IR and Raman spectroscopy and by nuclear inelastic scattering. The vibrational frequencies and normal modes and the IR and Raman intensities have been calculated by density functional methods. The vibrational entropy difference between the two isomers, DeltaS(vib), which is--together with the electronic entropy difference DeltaS(el)--the driving force for the spin-transition, has been determined from the measured and from the calculated frequencies. The calculated difference (DeltaS(vib) = 57-70 J mol(-1) K(-1), depending on the method) is in qualitative agreement with experimental values (20-36 J mol(-1) K(-1)). Only the low energy vibrational modes (20% of the 147 modes of the free molecule) contribute to the entropy difference and about three quarters of the vibrational entropy difference are due to the 15 modes of the central FeN(6) octahedron.  相似文献

The lithium-storage material Li(0.6)FePO(4) was studied by inelastic neutron scattering and differential scanning calorimetry. Li(0.6)FePO(4) undergoes a transformation from a two-phase mixture (heterosite and triphylite) to a disordered solid-solution at 200 degrees C. Phonon densities of states (DOS) obtained from the inelastic neutron scattering were similar for the two-phase sample measured at 180 degrees C and the disordered sample measured at 220 degrees C. The vibrational entropy of transformation is 1.8 +/-0.9 J/(K mol), which is smaller than the configurational entropy difference of approximately 3.1 J/(K mol). The measured enthalpy of the disordering transition was estimated as 2.5 kJ/mol. The phonon data show a small change in lattice dynamics upon disordering.  相似文献

The solution-crystallization mechanism was investigated for two polytypes in the M011 modification of n-hexatriacontane (n-C36H74), single-layered structure Mon, and double-layered one Orth II. The crystal growth under controlled supersaturation was followed with a micro- Fourier-transform-infrared spectrometer equipped with an optical system for oblique transmission measurements. Supersaturation dependence of growth behavior was significantly different between Mon and Orth II. Although the Mon crystal continued growing at a supersaturation of 0.27, the overgrowth of Orth II on the (001) face of the Mon crystal was confirmed at supersaturations below 0.21. Such a polytypic transformation was not observed for the Orth II crystal at any supersaturation below 0.30. The growth rate of Mon showed a quadratic dependence on supersaturation, while that of Orth II was approximately linear, suggesting spiral growth and two-dimensional-nucleation mechanisms for Mon and Orth II, respectively.  相似文献

Various types of molecular assembly of long-chain compounds in solid states were investigated by means of infrared absorption, Raman and Brillouin spectroscopic methods. As for the polymorphism in even-numbered n-fatty acids, three monoclinic modifications, B, C, and E, all consisting of the orthorhombic polyethylene sublattice, give rise to their characteristic infrared and Raman spectra. A dynamical equilibrium between cis and trans conformations of the hydrogen-bonded carboxyl groups in modification C, which is related to the high-temperature stable character of this phase, is reflected to a dramatic change with temperature in the low-frequency Raman spectra. A new type of reversible solid state phase transition was found between two A-type (triclinic) modifications of myristic, palmitic, and stearic acids. The γ→α phase transition of oleic acid was found to be caused by a conformational disordering of polymethylene chains at the lamellar interfacial region. Two basic polytype structures, Mon and Orth II, of stearic acid B were investigated, and it was found that the low-frequency phonon frequencies (below 50 cm−1) were strongly influenced by the polytype structure. Based on the spectroscopic considerations, Orth II was predicted as the thermodynamically stable phase around room temperature compared with Mon, and the stability is responsible for the vibrational free energy term. Some experimental findings which support this prediction were obtained. The values of the stiffness tensor elements of Mon and Orth II, measured by Brillouin scattering, indicate that the mechanical behavior of bulk crystals is very dependent on the polytype structure. The relationship between the mobility of chain molecules and the width of the spectral bands was investigated in a quantitative manner for the case of n-alkane molecules entrapped in the urea inclusion adducts. The changes in the half-width for the polarization components of various Raman bands on the transition from the orthorhombic to the hexagonal phase are interpreted in terms of the correlation functions of the Raman tensor related to the rotational motion of the alkane molecules around the chain axes.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulation and normal mode analysis are used to calculate the vibrational density of states of dihydrofolate reductase complexed with nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate at 120 K and the results are compared with the experimental spectrum derived from inelastic neutron scattering. The simulation results indicate that the experimental spectrum arises from an average over proteins trapped in different conformations with structural differences mainly in the loop regions, and that these conformations have significantly different low-frequency (<20 cm(-1)) spectra. Thus, the experimentally measured spectrum is an average over the vibrational modes of different protein conformations and is thus inhomogeneously broadened. The implications of this broadening for future neutron scattering experiments and ligand binding calculations are discussed.  相似文献

Molecular modeling is used to determine low-energy conformational structures and thermodynamic properties of levulinic acid in the gas phase. Structure and IR vibrational frequencies are obtained using density functional and M?ller-Plesset perturbation theories. Electronic energies are computed using G3//B3LYP and CBS-QB3 model chemistries. Computed anharmonic frequencies are consistent with reported experimental data. Population analysis shows a boat- and a chainlike structure to be most abundant at 298 K, with increasing proportions of two other conformers at higher temperatures. Population mean distribution values for thermodynamic quantities are derived. At 298 K and 1 atm, the enthalpy of formation, entropy, and heat capacity are -613.1 ± 1.0 kJ·mol(-1), 407.4 J·mol(-1)·K(-1), and 132.3 J·mol(-1)·K(-1), respectively.  相似文献

The vibrational contribution to DeltaS of the low-spin ((3)T(1)) to high-spin ((5)E) spin transition in two 3d(4) octahedral systems [Mn(III)(pyrol)(3)tren] and [Cr(depe)(2)I(2)] have been estimated by means of DFT calculations (B3LYP/CEP-31G) of the vibrational normal-modes frequencies. The obtained value at the transition temperature for the Mn(iii) complex is DeltaS(vib)(44 K) = 6.3 J K(-1) mol(-1), which is comparable with the proposed Jahn-Teller contribution of R ln3 = 9.1 J K(-1) mol(-1) and which is approximately half of the experimentally determined 13.8 J K(-1) mol(-1). The corresponding value for the Cr(ii) complex is DeltaS(vib)(171.45 K) = 46.5 J K(-1) mol(-1), as compared to the experimental value of 39.45 J K(-1) mol(-1). The analysis of the vibrational normal modes reveals that for the d(4) systems under study, contrary to Fe(ii) d(6) systems, not all metal-ligand stretching vibrations make a contribution. For the Mn(iii) complex, the only vibration that contributes to DeltaS(vib) involve the nitrogens occupying the Jahn-Teller axis, while in the case of Cr(ii) the contributing vibrations involve the Cr-I bonds. Low-frequency modes due to ring vibrations, metal-ligand bending and movement of the molecule as a whole also contribute to the vibrational entropy associated with the spin transition.  相似文献

This work describes a comprehensive assignment of the vibrational spectra of the platinum(II) diimine bisthiolate and chloride complexes as a prototype structure for a diversity of Pt(II) diimine chromophores. The dynamics and energy dissipation pathways in excited states of light harvesting molecules relies largely on the coupling between the high frequency and the low frequency modes. As such, the assignment of the vibrational spectrum of the chromophore is of utmost importance, especially in the low-frequency region, below 500 cm(-1), where the key metal-ligand framework modes occur. This region is experimentally difficult to access with infrared spectroscopy and hence frequently remains elusive. However, this region is easily accessible with Raman and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectroscopies. Accordingly, a combination of inelastic neutron scattering and Raman spectroscopy with the aid of computational results from periodic-DFT and the mode visualizations, as well as isotopic substitution, allowed for an identification of the modes that contain significant contributions from Pt-Cl, Pt-S, and Pt-N stretch modes. The results also demonstrate that it is not possible to assign transition energies to "pure", localized modes in the low frequency region, as a consequence of the anticipated severe coupling that occurs among the skeletal modes. The use of INS has proved invaluable in identifying and assigning the modes in the lowest frequency region, and overall the results will be of assistance in analyzing the structure of the electronic excited state in the families of chromophores containing a Pt(diimine) core.  相似文献

Low-frequency, gas-phase vibrational (Raman) spectroscopy was used in conjunction with a jet-cooled technique and ab initio calculations to study the intrinsic thermodynamic properties of the free (gas-phase) amino acid--glycine (Gly, H(2)NCHRCOOH). The first experimental evaluation of the enthalpy differences between the Gly conformations in the vapor phase is presented. The enthalpy values were determined to be 0.33 ± 0.05 and 1.15 ± 0.07 kcal mol(-1) for the ccc and gtt rotamers, respectively; the corresponding relative entropy values were -2.86 ± 0.12 and -0.12 ± 0.16 cal mol(-1) K(-1), respectively. It was proven that the low-frequency Raman and infrared spectroscopy is capable of estimating intrinsic thermodynamic parameters of protein building blocks, such as intermolecular hydrogen bonds (ccc conformer) and rotation around one of the bonds (N-C, gtt conformer). The inaccuracy of the RRHO approximation to Gly conformers was experimentally confirmed. Benchmark data for quantum theory and molecular dynamics were provided.  相似文献

Phonon spectra of recently synthesized Ag(II)SO4 have been measured using infrared absorption and Raman scattering spectroscopy, and theoretically predicted using density functional theory calculations. Excellent agreement between experimental and theoretical results with correlation coefficient of 1.05 allowed for full assignment of the experimentally observed vibrational bands, as well as calculation of standard vibrational entropy of AgSO4 (118.2 J mol−1 K−1), vibrational heat capacity at constant volume (99.1 J mol−1 K−1), zero-point energy (48.3 kJ mol−1). The experimental cut-off frequency of the phonon spectrum equals 1116 cm−1 which translates to the Debye temperature of 1606 K. High frequencies of S–O stretching modes render sulfate connections of Ag(II) attractive precursors of high-TC superconductors.  相似文献

Thermodynamic studies were carried out for the vapor complex of sodium chloride with hafnium tetrachloride at 712-778 K and 0.5-3.1 kPa by using high temperature phase equilibrium-quenching experiments, with closed Pyrex glass ampoules as the reaction containers. The results show that the sole predominant vapor complex is Na2HfCl6 for the HfCl4-NaCl system under the experimental conditions. The thermodynamic equilibrium constants and other thermodynamic functions of the reaction 2NaCl(s)+HfCl4(g)=Na2HfCl6(g) have been derived from the measurements. The results for the changes in enthalpy and entropy are -65.5§1.5 kJ/mol and -99.6§2.0 J/(mol K) in the temperature range.  相似文献

The 1A1 left arrow over right arrow 5T2 spin transition has been investigated in the solid solutions of Fe(x)M(1-x)(pyrazine)[Pt(CN)4] (M = Ni or Co, 0 < or = x < or = 1) having a three-dimensional polynuclear structure. Both Ni and Co dilutions tend to decrease the hysteresis width and smooth the transition curves. The enthalpy (entropy) change associated with the spin transition was found to decrease from 26 kJ mol(-1) (84 J K(-1) mol(-1)) for x = 1 to 12 kJ mol(-1) (47 J K(-1) mol(-1)) for 47% Co dilution and to 15 kJ mol(-1) (54 J K(-1) mol(-1)) for 59% Ni dilution. Raman spectroscopy revealed a mixed one- and two-mode behavior in the solid solutions. For the first time, a correlation between vibrational frequencies exhibiting one-mode behavior and the entropy change, which drives the spin crossover, is established.  相似文献

Solvated cobalt(II) ions in neat 1,3-propanediamine (tn) and n-propylamine (pa) have been characterized by electronic absorption spectroscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The equilibrium between tetrahedral and octahedral geometry for cobalt(II) ion has been observed in a neat pa solution, but not in neat diamine solutions such as tn and ethylenediamine (en). The thermodynamic parameters and equilibrium constant at 298 K for the geometrical equilibrium in pa were determined to be DeltaH degrees = -36.1 +/- 2.3 kJ mol(-1), DeltaS degrees = -163 +/- 8 J mol(-1) K(-1), and K(298) = 6.0 x 10(-3) M(-2), where K = [Co(pa)(6)(2+)]/{[Co(pa)(4)(2+)][pa](2)}. The equilibrium is caused by the large entropy gain in formation of the tetrahedral cobalt(II) species. The solvent exchange of cobalt(II) ion with octahedral geometry in tn and pa solutions has been studied by the (14)N NMR line-broadening method. The activation parameters and rate constants at 298 K for the solvent exchange reactions are as follows: DeltaH() = 49.3 +/- 0.9 kJ mol(-1), DeltaS() = 25 +/- 3 J mol(-1) K(-1), DeltaV() = 6.6 +/- 0.3 cm(3) mol(-1) at 302.1 K, and k(298) = 2.9 x 10(5) s(-1) for the tn exchange, and DeltaH() = 36.2 +/- 1.2 kJ mol(-1), DeltaS() = 35 +/- 6 J mol(-1) K(-1), and k(298) = 2.0 x 10(8) s(-1) for the pa exchange. By comparison of the activation parameters with those for the en exchange of cobalt(II) ion, it has been confirmed that the kinetic chelate strain effect is attributed to the large activation enthalpy for the bidentate chelate opening and that the enthalpic effect is smaller in the case of the six-membered tn chelate compared with the five-membered en chelate.  相似文献

The inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectrum of polycrystalline Cs2[B12H12] is assigned through 1200 cm(-1) on the basis of aqueous and solid-state Raman/IR measurements and normal mode analyses from solid-state density functional theory. The Cs+ cations are responsible for frequency shifts of the internal cage vibrational modes and I(h) cage mode splittings due to the crystal T(h) site symmetry. These changes to the [B12H12]2- molecular modes make isolated-molecule calculations inadequate for use in complete assignments. Solid-state calculations reveal that 30/40 cm(-1) shifts of Tg/Hg molecular modes are responsible for structure in the INS spectrum unobserved by optical methods or in aqueous solutions.  相似文献

Polytetrafluoroethylenes of different crystallinity were analyzed between 220 and 700 K by differential scanning calorimetry. A new computer coupling of the standard DSC is described. The measured heat capacity data were combined with all literature data into a recommended set of thermodynamic properties for the crystalline polymer and a preliminary set for the amorphous polymer (heat capacity, enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs energy; range 0–700 K). The crystal heat capacities have been linked to the vibrational spectrum with a θ3 of 54 K, and θ1 of 250 K, and a full set of group vibrations. Cv to Cp conversion was possible with a Nernst–Lindemann constant of A = 1.6 × 10?3 mol K/J. The glass transition was identified as a broad transition between 160 and 240 K with a ΔCp of 9.4 J/K mol. The room-temperature transitions at 292 and 303 K have a combined heat of transition of 850 J/mol and an entropy of transition of 2.90 J/K mol. The equilibrium melting temperature is 605 K with transition enthalpy and entropy of 4.10 kj/mol and 6.78 J/K mol, respectively. The high-temperature crystal from is shown to be a condis crystal (conformationally disordered), and for the samples discussed, the crystallinity model holds.  相似文献

Tertiary 1,1-dimethyl-4-alkenyl chloride (1) solvolyzes with significantly reduced secondary beta-deuterium kinetic isotope effect (substrate with two trideuteromethyl groups) and has a lower entropy and enthalpy of activation than the referent saturated analogue 4 (k(H)/k(D) = 1.30 +/- 0.03 vs k(H)/k(D) = 1.79 +/- 0.01; Delta Delta H(++) = -9 kJ mol(-1), Delta Delta S(++) = -36 J mol(-1) K(-1), in 80% v/v aqueous ethanol), indicating participation of the double bond in the rate-determining step. Transition structure 1-TS computed at the MP2(fc)/6-31G(d) level of theory revealed that the reaction proceeds through a late transition state with considerably pronounced double bond participation and a substantially cleaved C-Cl bond. The doubly unsaturated compound 3 (1,1-dimethyl-4,8-alkadienyl chloride) solvolyzes with further reduction of the isotope effect, and a drastically lower entropy of activation (k(H)/k(D) = 1.14 +/- 0.01; DeltaS(++) = -152 +/- 12 J mol(-1) K(-1), in 80% v/v aqueous ethanol), suggesting that the solvolysis of 3 proceeds by way of extended pi-participation, i.e., the assistance of both double bonds in the rate-determining step.  相似文献

Short-time dynamics of ionic liquids has been investigated by low-frequency Raman spectroscopy (4 < ω < 100 cm(-1)) within the supercooled liquid range. Raman spectra are reported for ionic liquids with the same anion, bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, and different cations: 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium, 1-butyl-1-methylpiperidinium, trimethylbutylammonium, and tributylmethylammonium. It is shown that low-frequency Raman spectroscopy provides similar results as optical Kerr effect (OKE) spectroscopy, which has been used to study intermolecular vibrations in ionic liquids. The comparison of ionic liquids containing aromatic and non-aromatic cations identifies the characteristic feature in Raman spectra usually assigned to librational motion of the imidazolium ring. The strength of the fast relaxations (quasi-elastic scattering, QES) and the intermolecular vibrational contribution (boson peak) of ionic liquids with non-aromatic cations are significantly lower than imidazolium ionic liquids. A correlation length assigned to the boson peak vibrations was estimated from the frequency of the maximum of the boson peak and experimental data of sound velocity. The correlation length related to the boson peak (~19 A?) does not change with the length of the alkyl chain in imidazolium cations, in contrast to the position of the first-sharp diffraction peak observed in neutron and X-ray scattering measurements of ionic liquids. The rate of change of the QES intensity in the supercooled liquid range is compared with data of excess entropy, free volume, and mean-squared displacement recently reported for ionic liquids. The temperature dependence of the QES intensity in ionic liquids illustrates relationships between short-time dynamics and long-time structural relaxation that have been proposed for glass-forming liquids.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics and resulting disorder in the soft crystal, smectic E (SmE) phase, were studied in detail for the title compound, 4-butyl-4'-isothiocyano-1,1'-biphenyl (4TCB), by (1)H NMR spectroscopy and adiabatic calorimetry. The ordered crystal phase of 4TCB was realized for the first time under ambient pressure after long two-step annealing and used as the reference state in the analysis of the experimental results. Four motional modes were identified in the SmE phase through the analysis of the (1)H NMR T(1). The residual entropy was determined as ca. 6 J K(-1) mol(-1). This magnitude implies that most of the disorder in the SmE phase at high temperatures is removed on cooling except for the head-to-tail disorder of the rod-shaped 4TCB molecule. Standard thermodynamic functions are tabulated below 375 K.  相似文献

Low-frequency (5-200 cm(-1)) Raman spectra are reported for the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [bmim]PF(6), in glassy, supercooled liquid, and normal liquid phases (77-330 K). Raman spectra of [bmim]PF(6) agree with previous results obtained by optical Kerr effect spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulation. Both the superposition model and the coupling model give reasonable fit to low-frequency Raman spectra of [bmim]PF(6). The configurational entropy of [bmim]PF(6) has been evaluated as a function of temperature using recently reported data of heat capacity. The calculated configurational entropy is inserted in the Adam-Gibbs theory for supercooled liquids, giving a good fit to non-Arrhenius behavior of viscosity and diffusive process, with the latter revealed by a recent neutron scattering investigation of [bmim]PF(6). There is a remarkable linear dependence between intensity of quasielastic Raman scattering and configurational entropy from 77 K up to the melting point of [bmim]PF(6). This correlation offers insight into the nature of dynamical processes probed by low-frequency Raman spectra of ionic liquids.  相似文献

X-ray diffraction data of high quality measured to high resolution on crystals of the two pentitol epimers ribitol (centric) and xylitol (acentric) at 101, 141, and 181 K and data on the two compounds previously recorded at 122 K have formed the basis for multipole refinements with the VALRAY system. Our analysis showed that it is possible to obtain a reliable crystal electron density for an acentric compound (xylitol) from X-ray diffraction data and that the thermal motion can be deconvoluted from the static density in this temperature range. The Bader-type topological analysis of the static electron densities revealed virtually identical intramolecular interactions as well as very similar hydrogen bond interactions of ribitol and xylitol; the only minor differences are found in the weaker intermolecular interactions. The high-level periodic DFT calculations are in accordance with the thermodynamic measurements that show that the two pentitols have identical sublimation energies. A rigid body normal coordinate analysis was performed on the atomic displacement parameters obtained at the four different temperatures. The translational and librational mean square deviations derived through this analysis were used in a quantum statistical approach to derive frequencies of the corresponding harmonic oscillators. The analysis showed a consistent vibrational model for all temperatures. The frequencies were subsequently used to calculate crystal entropies assuming an Einstein-type behavior. These calculations show that the crystal entropy of ribitol is 8 J K(-1) mol(-1) higher than the crystal entropy of xylitol, confirming that it is a difference in the entropy of the two compounds that causes the difference in their free energy. Our results presented in this Article show the potential to use X-ray diffraction data to obtain physicochemical properties of crystals.  相似文献
